Something about that Moon!

The moon has a magnetic pull over me! Yes, its true! Just like it has a magic power over the ocean, it draws me toward it in all its phases. The author Barbara Brown Taylor describes it like this.

"I have been given the gift of lunar spirituality, in wihich the divine light available to me waxes and wanes with the season. When I go out on my porch at night, th moon never looks the same way twice. Some nights it is as round and bright as a headlight; other nights it is thinner than the sickle hanging in my garage. Some nights it is high in the sky, and other nights low over the mountains. Some nights it is altogether gone, leaving a web of vast stars that are brighter in its absence. All in all, the moon is a truer mirror for my soul than the sun that looks the same way everyday."

She goes on to ask this important question:

" What would my life with God look like if I trusted this rhythm instead of opposing it?"

What does it mean to you, to trust the rhythm of the moon?

I hope to explore this question with you a little more in the coming weeks, as I explore the ebb and flow of my life. With a chronic health challenge, the ebbs in my life can really challenge my ability to find joy and meaning. And yet, isn't that what this quote above is asking me to do? To find joy even in the darkness? In her book, "Learning to Walk in the Dark," Taylor explores how to find light even in the most difficult of situations. This isn't the first time I have read this book. I am looking forward to seeing how my bookmarked pages inspire me at this time in my life.

Coincidentally, I am also listening to "Bittersweet" by Susan Cain. It is about the place where joy and sorrow meet. I never thought of myself as a melancholy person, but I am definitely someone who works at finding joy everywhere, including the brokenness of life. Check out her bittersweet quiz here.

I don't think there has ever been a more important time in my life to be tuned into the joy amidst the sorrow. The world is challenging, my health is challenging, and I am more aware now than any other time in my life about the importance of creating joy in my life. I hope you walk with me as I explore these ideas.
